Abstract
Tuberculosis of the tongue is one of the rare lesion caused by tubercle bacillus.
Tuberculosis of the tongue has been reported to occur mostly in association with Tuberculosis elsewhere
in the body especially the lung and this type is called secondary tuberculosis of the tongue. Rarely,
however, it has also been found to occur in absence of any detactable evidence of tubercular lesion
elsewhere in the body and this type is called primary tuberculosis of the tongue.
Authos experienced a case of secondary tuberculosis of the tongue. A 63 year-old Korean male was
admitted in Dept. of surgery, Cho Sun University Hospital, on January, 20th, 1972, for mass in
right side edge of the tongue of a year duration.
Examination of the tongue revealed a small round and firm mass measuring 2.5§¯¡¿2.0§¯ in edge
of middle part of right side of the tongue. There was grayish white coated, round, undermined shallow
ulcer measuring 1.0§¯¡¿1.0§¯, in central part of the mas. The rest of the tongue was normal in
consistency and was not tender. Submandibular lymphnodes were enlared. Chest X-ray rvealed for
advanced bilateral active pulmonary tuberculosis.
Clinically a carcinoma of the tongue was considered.
The whole tumor mass with the adjoining normal tongue tissue was excised under general anesthesia
on January 22th, 1972 and was taken for histopathological examiation, and the pathological diagnosis
was tuberculogosis of the tongue.
2 months after excision, the lesion of the tongue was covered with healthy pink epithelium by
streptomycin and I.N.A.H. administraion.
As far as the underlying pulmonary lesion is concerned, there has been no improvement.
